What you’ll Learn

Perioperative care begins from the time a patient enters surgical clinic with a potential surgically treatable problem and continues through surgery until full recovery. The care encompasses attention to detail involving multiple specialists to ensure patients’ preoperative clinical condition and is optimised based on their comorbidities and achieve successful outcome with minimal / zero morbidity and mortality. The basic concept is Patient centric multidisciplinary care based on surgical factors and patient factors.

The course focusses on:

1. Knowledge of perioperative medicine

2. Clinical skills and

3. Non-technical skills which are the equally important, i.e. team work and communication at the right time to improve care. This training will help the participants to develop the thought process in the right direction.

Over the last decade, we see more of high-risk patients across all the age groups due to multiple comorbidities. Clinicians need to understand the pathophysiology of how a particular patient will respond to surgical stress, dynamics under anaesthesia and the potential problems that may arise in the postoperative period. With this knowledge, they will be taught to assess, treat and escalate management as appropriate. This is a very unique course as we address issues that can be modified to achieve excellence in patient care. Team building exercises will be conducted to understand importance of communication and documentation. Overall, the course will provide a 360-degree approach to the care of a surgical patient - preoperative, intraoperative & postoperative.
